Navajo bill seeks to fire top 2 justice officials

The top two justice officials on the Navajo Nation have less than a month left in their jobs before a new tribal administration takes over.

But legislation on the Tribal Council’s special session agenda this week seeks to fire Attorney General Louis Denetsosie and Deputy Attorney General Harrison Tsosie.

The two-day session starts this week in Window Rock.

The agenda also includes a bill to ask voters to return the Tribal Council to 88 members.

Navajos voted a year ago to reduce the council to 24 members as part of a ballot initiative. The smaller council will be seated in January.

Navajo President Joe Shirley Jr. says the size of the council can be changed only through a citizen-led initiative, not through a council-driven ballot measure.
