Navajo Tribal Council to stay at 24 members

Flagstaff, Arizona (AP) December 2010

Navajo lawmakers voted down a measure last week that would have increased the Tribal Council from 24 members to 88.

Navajos voted a year ago to reduce the council to 24 members as part of a ballot initiative. The smaller council will be seated in January.

The measure sought to have Navajos vote through a referendum to increase the council.

A special session of the Tribal Council continues this week in Window Rock.

Still on the agenda are two bills to fire the tribe’s top two justice officials – Attorney General Louis Denetsosie and Deputy Attorney General Harrison Tsosie. Both have less than a month left in their jobs before a new tribal administration takes over.
