Tribe's gas station plans draw Lake County's ire

Upper Lake, California (AP) January 2011

Lake County officials are objecting to an American Indian tribe's plans to build a gas station on a site designated to be returned to wetlands.

County officials say the Pomo Indians of the Robinson Rancheria have not told them how emissions from the planned gas station near Upper Lake will be monitored.

The county also has raised concerns that the station will have an unfair advantage over other gas stations because it is not subject to state and local permits. The land is considered sovereign and is only subject, for the most part, to federal regulation.

County officials told the Press Democrat of Santa Rosa that the tribe has already installed gasoline storage tanks on the 2-acre site, across from its casino.

The tribe did not respond to calls seeking comment.
