Hopi food, farming focus of agricultural expo

Moenkopi, Arizona (AP) January 2011

A hotel on the Hopi reservation is holding the first event in a series meant to draw tourists to the home of one of the oldest indigenous tribes in America.

A photo exhibit and expo this week at the Moenkopi Legacy Inn & Suites will focus on dry farming, which has been a staple of Hopi life for thousands of years.

The photo exhibit will be on display at the hotel throughout the year while guides offer tours of Hopi gardens and corn fields, and tribal members open up their homes to visitors.

Demonstrations and presentations include specialized farming techniques that range from dry farming to the cultivation of heirloom seeds, the benefits of traditional tobacco, Hopi heritage, language and culture, and gathering crops.
