Cherokee board votes to keep graduation at church

Canton, Georgia (AP) January 2011

The Cherokee County school board has voted to keep graduation ceremonies at a local mega-church despite protests from a Washington-based organization.

The board voted last week before a packed audience to continue to use the First Baptist Church of Woodstock’s 5,000-seat auditorium. The district has used the church since 2005, but this year the Americans United for Separation of Church and State asked the district to move the event.

District officials say the church only costs $2,000 to rent, compared to the $40,000 similarly sized places charge.
