Tiguas to determine tribal membership requirements under bill 8-07

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Tiguas would receive the right to determine
requirements for tribal membership under a bill passed by the House
of Representatives on Monday.

The legislation, introduced by Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-El Paso,
amends a 1987 act that required an individual to be one-eighth Tigua
in order to be part of the tribe.

The Tigua were one of two American Indian tribes required to get
congressional approval to change their membership eligibility, Reyes

“Fundamentally, this is an issue of equity and fairness,” said
Reyes. “The Tigua are a sovereign nation and deserve the right to
exercise their own self-determination.”
