Cherokee chief’s observer alleges recount issues

Tahlequah, Oklahoma (AP) July 2011

A supporter of Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith says there were irregularities in a recount during a disputed election.

Smith and tribal councilman Bill John Baker are locked in the dispute over who won the election to lead the American Indian tribe for the next four years. The latest hand recount showed Baker up by 266 votes, but previous counts have had both men ahead at times.

The Tulsa World reports Val Giebel, a ballot-counting watcher representing Smith, says in an affidavit filed with the tribal Supreme Court that she observed disorganization among those conducting the recount that could have led to a shoddy result.

Baker has called on Smith to concede the election but Smith filed an appeal asking the court to order a machine-conducted recount.
