The Narragansett Tribe has re-elected chief sachem Matthew Thomas for a third five-year term.

Thomas garnered 306 votes, or about two-thirds of the more than 450 ballots cast.

Challenger Paulla Dove Jennings, a former tribal councilwoman, got 145 votes.

There was a potential for trouble with some ousted tribal members disenrolled by the tribe recently saying they would try to vote. Jennings says a few people were turned away, but there was no trouble.

Jennings congratulated Thomas on his victory and says she hopes he can live up to the tribe’s ideals and expectations.
