Girl, 8, wins contest to name baby condor at National Aviary

Pittsburgh, Pennslyvania (AP) 11-07

The baby Andean condor born June 28 at the National Aviary now has a name thanks to an 8-year-old Mercer County girl.

Karli Sutton of Grove City won a contest to name the bird Kachina. The name is the Hopi word for spirit.

The winning entry was chosen from 450 that children 12 and under submitted.

Kachina is the second Andean condor born at the aviary. The other, named Kendall, was born in 2005 and has since been released to live in the wilds of Bolivia.

Kachina will also be released somewhere in South America after she grows for a couple of years at the aviary.
