Mescalero Apache to get 45 surplus FEMA trailers 4-20-07

MESCALERO, N.M. (AP) - The Mescalero Apache Tribe is getting 45 surplus trailers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help meet housing needs on the southern New Mexico reservation.

The tribe, which has about 500 families on a waiting list for housing, applied for the surplus mobile homes, said Sen. Pete Domenici and Rep. Steve Pearce, both R-N.M. They worked with FEMA and the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs to advance the Mescalero application.

“The real winners in this situation are the folks who will now have a home of their own,” Pearce said.

The tribe will pay to move the mobile homes to the reservation from FEMA storage in Hope, Ark.

This year's homeland security appropriations included language that gives tribes access to surplus FEMA trailers.
