Mashpee Wampanoag tribe approves land deal with town of Mashpee

Members of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe have approved a land deal with the town of Mashpee.

The agreement would place 140 acres of land into trust through the Federal Bureau of Indian Affairs. But it also contains a promise that the tribe would not try to build a casino, or make further land claims in Mashpee.

Town officials had initially balked at the deal, fearing that the tribe might try to build a casino in Mashpee if plans for a $1 billion casino in Middleborough fall through.

The start the tribal meeting at the townÂ’s high school was marred by a confrontation with four tribe members who were turned away by security. The four had been shunned for bringing suit against the tribal council last year.
