Guardsman awarded settlement in rehire case

A former guardsman with the Alaska Air National Guard finally has received a settlement in a refusal-to-rehire case.

Robert Traut’s employer refused to rehire him after returning from active duty nearly eight years ago. Traut, who now works as a supply technician at the Kodiak Coast Guard Base, was an employee of the Indian Health Service in Anchorage when he went on active duty.

When he returned in June 2000, his employer refused to give him back his old job.

Traut filed a claim and the case languished for seven years.

Last year, Sen. Lisa Murkowski intervened to help Traut settle the case.

The settlement gives Traut back pay. The amount was not disclosed.
