Tense standoff ends when man surrenders 5-22-07

MOUNT PLEASANT, Wis. (AP) - A domestic dispute turned into a standoff with police when a man held his 2-year-old daughter at gunpoint after taking the child from her mother, police said.

Mount Pleasant police and Racine County sheriff's officers responded to the Indian Hills Apartments at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday after getting the call that the girl's mother had been hit in the face and her daughter was taken hostage.

Authorities said officers eventually rescued the child by negotiating by telephone with the suspect, who then left the building and was taken into custody.

Sheriff's officials said charges were expected to be filed against the man.
