Census Bureau considers hiring locals for village count

The U.S. Census Bureau is considering hiring locals to do the 2010 count in Alaska Native villages.

Barbara Fleek, a partnership specialist with the U.S. Census Bureau in Alaska, says locals know the community best and could be very effective.

The idea was discussed at a conference in Anchorage.

The meeting brought together tribal liaisons from around the state who are working with the bureau to make sure Alaska Native villages are properly counted in 2010.

The Census helps determine how more than $430 billion in federal funds are distributed each year.
