Autry museum boss John Gray announces retirement

Los Angeles, California (AP) March 2010

The man who turned a tribute to singing cowboy Gene Autry into a major cultural center is retiring.

An official with the Autry National Center says 61-year-old John L. Gray will continue his job as president through the end of 2010 or until a new president is found.

When Gray joined the Autry center in 1999, it was called the Autry Museum of Western Heritage. Then it merged with the Women of the West Museum in Denver in 2002 and the Southwest Museum of the American Indian in Los Angeles in 2003.

Gray also helped establish the research center, the Institute for the Study of the American West.
