Ballpark’s Indian sculpture removed

Richmond, Virginia (AP) March 2010

A giant sculpture outside of Richmond’s minor league ballpark has been removed.

The sculpture of an American Indian called “Connecticut” had been a part of The Diamond since 1985 and served as a towering symbol of the Class AAA Richmond Braves.

But with a new team called the Flying Squirrels coming to the city, the Richmond Metropolitan Authority sought to relocate the statue.

The statue was removed over the weekend. Its next home will be the Lucky Strike building in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom, where it could be unveiled in May as part of a push for federal recognition of six Virginia tribes.
