Navajo Council OK’s Internet sex crimes measure

Flagstaff, Arizona (AP) April 2010

Navajo lawmakers have passed a measure to make the sexual exploitation of children via the Internet a crime under tribal law.

The Tribal Council approved the measure during its spring session Thursday in Window Rock. The measure also makes possession of child pornography illegal.

Under the law, anyone caught using a computer, digital camera, telephone, video recorder or other electronic equipment to prey on minors would be subject to prosecution.

Convicted offenders face up to a year in jail, which is the maximum time allowed under tribal law, be fined $5,000 or both.

Navajo President Joe Shirley Jr. has 10 days to act on the measure once it reaches his desk.
