Navajo Council weighs override of line-item vetoes

Window Rock, Arizona (AP) July 2010

Navajo lawmakers convening for a special session July 13 are considering overriding the tribal president's first line-item vetoes.

Navajo President Joe Shirley Jr. stripped $5.6 million last month from a bill passed by the Tribal Council. He issued an executive order July 12 to prevent staff from processing any appropriations that have been the subject of a line-item veto.

The tribe's attorney general issued a legal opinion the week before saying line-item vetoes are not subject to overrides. That language was part of a ballot initiative approved by Navajos in December.

Council Delegate Young Jeff Tom is sponsoring the override legislation. He has separate measures to appropriate some of the funding that has been line-item vetoed.
