Report: Anecdotes point to racism against Navajos

Window Rock, Arizona (AP) July 2010

The Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission says anecdotal evidence shows that Navajos are discriminated against in and around the reservation but that the prevalence of it is unclear.

The commission conducted 25 hearings on race relations from December 2008 to September. The findings were reported to the Tribal Council on July 19 during the first day of its summer session in Window Rock.

The commission says many Navajos raised concerns about unattended deaths, relocation, sacred sites and the environment. Racial profiling, unscrupulous business practices and poor working conditions also were topics of testimony.

The commission recommended increased dialogue with border town officials to curb discrimination and ensure that Navajos are given the same opportunities, benefits and services as others.
