Oregon tribes get $2M for affordable housing

Pendleton, Oregon (AP) August 2010

The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation have been granted $2 million in federal funding to manage and develop affordable housing.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said the grant to the Umatilla Reservation Housing Authority can be used for a variety of activities.

The list includes operating assistance, crime prevention, new construction, modernization or building rehabilitation.

Oregon Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden announced the grant, saying that safe, affordable housing is crucial to the success of families and will also help create jobs.
