Peoria airport discussed

Peoria, Arizona (AP) February 2011

Phoenix, Glendale, Goodyear have municipal airports and now there’s word Peoria may want one too.

The Arizona Republic reports Peoria officials are talking with a local developer and Oklahoma’s Osage Indian Tribe about building an airport and an adjacent business-filled airpark on state trust land northeast of Lake Pleasant Parkway and Loop 303.

The Republic says the tribe is interested in diversifying its investments.

Peoria officials say the proposed airport is about 10 years away and others question whether it’s needed at all with most Phoenix-area municipal airports reporting reduced flight activity in the past three years.

Peoria Mayor Bob Barrett says Luke Air Force Base would have to be comfortable with it. A Luke spokesman didn’t voice any immediate concerns, although aircraft volume and airspace use would have to be closely coordinated.
