Minorities more prevalent in Sioux Falls school district

The Sioux Falls School District set records this fall for total enrollment and racial diversity.

The record enrollment of 20,000 students includes more than 20 percent who are minorities. More than 4,000 students are black, Hispanic, American Indian or Asian.

Sioux Falls students now speak 56 languages.

Deb Muilenburg-Wilson, special services director, told the school board Monday night that the number of students in the district’s English Language Learners program has reached 1,314, up from 420 in 1996.
