A company that operates a western North Dakota coal mine is donating 1,240 acres of land and more than $625,000 to a trust fund set up to benefit American Indian culture.

The Coteau Properties Company says it is donating the land to the Indian Cultural Education Trust, which will be managed by the North Dakota Board of University and School Lands.

Coteau says the donation is the result of an agreement with the Three Affiliated Tribes, to deal with the effect of CoteauÂ’s mining operations on Indian cultural sites.

Coteau Properties, a subsidiary of North American Coal Corp., operates the Freedom Mine near Beulah.
