Foxwoods appeals labor board ruling

Mashantucket, Connecticut (AP) 11-07
The Mashantucket Pequots say they have appealed the October ruling by the regional National Labor Relations Board that gives workers at the tribe’s Foxwoods Resort Casino an opportunity to unionize.

The labor board ruled that Foxwoods workers be allowed to hold a union election, rejecting the tribe’s argument that tribal employment law has jurisdiction in the matter. The decision could set the stage for one of the first unions at a tribal casino.

The Mashantuckets appealed the ruling to the board’s national office in Washington. Tribal spokesman Bruce MacDonald says tribal lawyers have spelled out in great detail that it’s tribal labor law that prevails on the reservation.

About 3,000 Foxwoods dealers are set to vote on whether they will be represented by the United Auto Workers.
