A film studies minor has been approved for the University of South Dakota.

“Students have a strong interest in the popular culture of the film world,” said Timothy Case, professor of theater at USD. “By taking a body of courses that discuss film theory and criticism, film and culture, and filmmaking, students will have a deeper understanding of how films reflect who they are.

“Our goal is to provide a background in the basics of film history, criticism, genre and theory through a series of courses that constitutes a minor,” said Case. “Students interested in continuing their study of film will have a good foundation upon which to base further study.”

Students seeking a minor in Film Studies must take Film Appreciation, World Cinema, Film History, and Film Genre and Culture. Other offerings include directing, acting, video production, directing, U.S. Western history in film and American Indians in film.

More than 200 students enrolled in the department’s Film Appreciation course this fall, USD said in a release.
