Tribal cougar hunt nets few felines

New Town, North Dakota (AP) Jan. 2010

The Three Affiliated Tribes’ top wildlife official says there has been a spate of mountain lion sightings on the Fort Berthold Reservation but hunters have had limited success killing the cats.

Tribal Game and Fish Director Fred Poitra says only a few of the reclusive cougars have been bagged since a special hunting season opened three years ago.

Poitra says about 100 licenses have been issued this season to non-tribal members, who have come from across the country to hunt the animals.

Non-tribal members from North Dakota killed two cougars in December. Poitra says out-of state hunters have not yet had success.
